Top Ten Protest Songs and the Events that Inspired Them – 7

00:00:00I think the first people who are really

00:00:03ever writing protest songs are people

00:00:05who i like to call 20th century pioneers

00:00:10for change a great example of this would

00:00:13be a woman who a lot of us potentially

00:00:16don’t know these days but her name is

00:00:18Julia Ward Howe and basically what these

00:00:22people did they didn’t seem too they

00:00:24don’t seem to have written a lot of

00:00:25their own music they tended to take

00:00:27songs that were kind of like a great

00:00:28American standards that everyone knew

00:00:30that everyone could sit along sing along

00:00:31to and they change the words now a great

00:00:34example of this is the suffrage song

00:00:37which is sung to the tune of America and

00:00:40and that’s a that’s that’s house own own

00:00:44song and why I find this so interesting

00:00:47is that these songs were used to

00:00:49motivate in rally people from many

00:00:51diverse backgrounds and culture all

00:00:52experiencing different type of

00:00:54oppressions and I really feel that

00:00:55they’re a precursor to for example a

00:00:58George Harrison or Neil Young who have

00:01:00their their farm aid in their Live Aid

00:01:02and their concert for Bangladesh which

00:01:04are really just all about raising

00:01:05awareness and saying hey you see what’s

00:01:07going on in the world this isn’t right

00:01:08and without these early 20th century

00:01:11kind of pioneers for change and without

00:01:13this like this early movement these

00:01:15later people wouldn’t have been possible

00:01:16which is why I really wanted to to

00:01:18single out a person like Julia Ward Howe
